MARCH 2024

It’s March…and you know what that means – spring is just around the corner!  Now, on a sunny Sunday during an Open House, you can almost smell the freshness in the air, through the, um, smell of the four and two-legged animal manure.  Almost.  It IS a farm, after all, and we at Muddy Paws tend to like that aroma.

March also means that we move our clocks ahead and lose an hour sleep.  While humans can get grumpy from losing sleep and it can take us a while to adjust, animals can be affected too.  They’re used to their routines and their feeding schedules so changing clocks can make the animals grumpy when they don’t get fed on their usual schedule.  Roosters though, like our Rocky, Penguin and Pearl, don’t recognize daylight saving time because they only recognize when the sun rises and sets.  So no matter what the clock says, when the sun comes up and goes down, you can hear them loud and clear. VERY loud and clear.

SPOTLIGHT ON:

COCK COCK

Meet Cock Cock... the peacock named by McKinley, who was 16 months old at the time.

He was rescued from a defunct petting zoo in a neighboring county. We aren’t sure how old he is but peacocks can live up to 15 years. He can fly and will go wherever he pleases, but most of the time he stays on the farm because he gets free meals.

Cock Cock mated last spring with Claudette, our peahen, and now has 2 offspring who never leave mom’s side (we aren’t sure yet if they’re boys or girls).

Mating season is in full swing so you can see Cock Cock with his fan in full display, although he sometimes gets confused and displays himself for the chickens and roosters, who have no interest, but he keeps trying! It’s okay because he sure is beautiful!

AROUND THE FARM

March 8th was a fun time for all of the horses, donkeys and goats, well, not really - they got their spring shots - that means all hands on deck to wrangle everyone - they don’t like shots either - but we need to keep everyone healthy!
